Plate with the house number on the facade: a decoration that must remain legible
The house number is one of the first signs that guests see. It can complement the character of the facade, highlight the door material and tell a story about the residents, but above all it should allow you to quickly find the right address. This is important not only for the courier. Clear marking also helps emergency services, guests and people who come to a given address for the first time.
Therefore, the house number on the facade is worth assessing from two perspectives. Up close it may be a carefully crafted detail, but from the road it should create a simple, unambiguous message. The most beautiful address plate for a house will not fulfill its function if the numbers disappear in the ornaments, blend into the background or are covered by an open gate.
Where to put the house number?
The best spot is seen from the direction from which most people are coming or coming. The number should not be hidden behind plants, a gutter, a car or a gate leaf. It is worth checking it from the street both during the day and after dark.
If the house is located close to the road, the natural place is the front part of the facade, preferably near the entrance. When the building is located far inside the plot, a marking on the fence, gate or entry post may be more legible. Sometimes two signs are practical: the main one on the road side and the additional one at the entrance.
Do not install a plate on the moving part of the gate if the number becomes invisible or changes position after opening it. It is also a good idea to avoid places that are constantly shaded, heavily dirty or exposed to water flowing from the roof.
What size of house digits will be legible?
There is no one universal size suitable for every building. The size of the digits should be selected primarily according to the distance from which the number will be read, the observer's movement speed, contrast and the amount of free space around the characters.
As a practical starting point, you can take:
- when reading from approximately 5-10 meters: digits approximately 8-12 cm high;
- when reading from about 10-20 meters: about 12-18 cm;
- with a greater distance from the house to the road: 18-25 cm or more, depending on the surroundings.
These are design guidelines, not statutory minimums. A slender, decorative number may be less legible than a simpler sign of the same height. The width of the line is also important: thin lines disappear faster from a greater distance and in low light.
The simplest test involves printing the numbers in the planned size, sticking a piece of paper at the installation site and walking to the other side of the street. It is worth asking a person who does not know the number to read it. Such a test shows actual readability better than viewing the design on a screen.
How to choose the format of the entire board?
The format should leave a quiet margin around the number. The numbers squeezed between the edge, the street name and the decoration lose their clarity. The more characters a number contains - for example, "128A" instead of "7" - the wider the plate needed.
When it comes to the number itself, a compact form works well. If the plate is also to contain the name of a street or town, a horizontal format or division into two clear lines: a large number and smaller supporting information will usually be better. The number should remain the dominant element.
In the case of a relief or relief, the decorative motif should be built around a clear field with numbers. The depth of the milling, light and shadow can give the plaque a sculptural character, but should not force the viewer to look for the number in the image.
Contrast is more important than color itself
Dark numbers on a light background or light numbers on a dark background can be read faster than characters in colors of similar brightness. This also applies to natural wood: beautiful grain cannot compete with the number.
It is worth taking into account the color of the facade. The plaque may harmonize with the door, woodwork or details of the house, but its edge should not disappear on the wall. Darker highlighting of the recesses, a clear background under the numbers and an appropriate amount of empty space help.
If the number is to be visible at night, you need to provide facade lighting or a separate lamp directed at the sign. The large size alone won't help when the marking remains completely invisible after dark.
Does the street name have to be on the sign?
According to art. 47b of the Geodetic and Cartographic Law Act, the owner of developed real estate or another entity managing it, disclosed in the land and building register, is obliged to place a plate with the serial number in a visible place - on the front wall of the building or on the fence - within 30 days of receiving notification of the number.
Current nationwide regulation does not automatically require that a street name be placed on every sign. However, the commune council may, by way of a resolution, introduce the obligation to provide the name of a town, district, housing estate, urban complex, street or square. Before ordering, it is worth checking the resolutions of your commune or asking at the commune or city office.
This is important because you can still find guides on the Internet based on the earlier wording of the Act, according to which the name of a street or town was generally required. The regulations were changed in 2023. The current wording can be checked in art. 47b of the Geodetic and Cartographic Law, and an explanation of the change was also published by General Office of Geodesy and Cartography.
What type of digits should I choose?
It is easiest to read digits with clear proportions and a sufficiently thick line. A decorative cut may match the character of the house, but the numbers 1 and 7, 3 and 8 or 6 and 9 should not look similar. For a longer number, the letter must be as legible as the numbers.
Good design combines individuality with simplicity. The motif of a house, forest, mountains, animal or passion can give the marking a personal character if it maintains a clear hierarchy: first we see the number, only then we discover the details.
What material will work well on the façade?
The material must be selected to suit the conditions at the installation site. The outdoor sign is exposed to rain, frost, UV radiation, moisture and temperature changes. Before purchasing, make sure that the manufacturer has intended a specific model for outdoor use and specified the maintenance method.
Wood gives a warm, natural effect and allows you to create a three-dimensional relief. However, it requires proper protection, proper installation and periodic inspection of the coating. A covered entrance places different demands on the material than an uncovered southern wall or a roadside post.
The mounting should be adapted to the weight of the board and the surface. One solution is used on plaster, another on wood, brick, stone or metal fence. The installation must not create a place where water constantly accumulates behind the sign.
House number or address board?
The house number may be an independent designation consisting only of numbers and a possible letter. An address table provides more information - it may include a street address, town or other data required locally. The choice depends on the visibility of the property, the numbering method in the area and municipal regulations.
On a straight street and a clearly visible building, the number itself may be sufficient. In a scattered development, with similar street names or complicated access, an additional name can make it really easier to find the address, even if local regulations do not require it.
Checklist before ordering a façade number
Before approving the project, it is worth answering a few questions:
- Does the number match the official notification of its establishment?
- Does the local resolution require the name of a street, town or housing estate?
- From what distance do you have to read the numbers?
- Does the number remain visible when the gate is open and the car is parked?
- Will the contrast be sufficient against the background of the façade?
- Is the place lit after dark?
- Are the material and finish designed for the given outdoor conditions?
- Does the mounting method match the surface?
A good number takes you home
A successful façade number is not a random number attached to the wall. It combines legibility with the character of the place. From the road, it quickly indicates the correct address, and up close it can reveal material, relief and motifs related to the house or the passion of its inhabitants.
First, you need to determine the content required in a given commune, the place of installation and the required size of the digits. Only then should you choose the shape, color and decoration. This order ensures that the sign remains useful while also becoming a sign that truly suits the home.
If you are looking for a smaller sign for the interior of the building, see the separate collection of numbers for apartment doors. Residential models have different dimensions and should not be automatically treated as signs intended for exposed facades.
