Wood that accepts detail well
Not every wood behaves in the same way. Some species are hard and expressive, others are softer and calmer to work with. Limewood has long been associated with carving and detailed work because it allows gentle transitions, small shapes, and readable relief.
In small bas-reliefs this is especially important. Every millimetre matters. A cat's ear, the edge of a digit, a line of fur, a small window in a house. Everything has to be visible, but it must not feel heavy.
Why limewood?
Limewood has a light colour and a delicate grain. Thanks to this, it shows form well. It does not compete with detail through strong grain. After oil or wax finishing, it gains a warmer tone while remaining calm.
It is a good material for objects meant to be close to people: small decorations, plaques, reliefs, and wooden door numbers.
CNC milling and hand finishing
At SunriseStamp, models are CNC milled in limewood. This makes it possible to achieve a repeatable form and precise detail. After milling, each piece is sanded and finished by hand.
It is a combination of two stages. The machine gives the shape. The hand refines the surface, brings out the texture, and decides the final character.
Thanks to this, the model is not accidental, but it also does not look like a plastic form. The wood still works through its grain, small differences, and light on the surface.
Oil and wax finish
The finish has a strong effect on how a wooden bas-relief is perceived. Raw limewood is light and delicate. Oil or wax emphasizes the relief, protects the surface, and gives depth to the shadows.
In darker finishes, recesses, texture, and carved lines are easier to see. In lighter ones, the natural lightness of limewood remains more visible.
Small format, a lot of work
A small wooden object may look simple, but it often requires many stages. Design, file preparation, milling, cleaning, sanding, finishing, detail control, packing.
In small forms, inaccuracies cannot be hidden. Closeness is unforgiving. What disappears on a large element immediately comes to light in a small bas-relief.
Wood as part of atmosphere
Limewood is not only a technical material. In the finished object, its warmth, workshop scent, texture, and natural grain remain. That is why small wooden forms work well near doors, on walls, on shelves, or as a gift with a message.
They do not have to dominate. It is enough that they are present.
